30 Parks in 30 Days to Help Find a Cure
This trip grew out of my wanting to treat myself for my 50th birthday. However it’s become something more.
When it comes to sports, I like most of them, but baseball has always been, and will always be, my first love. As I’m fond of saying, “there’s only 2 seasons, baseball season and winter.” James Earl Jones put it much more eloquently when he said,
“The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again.”
To me, it’s more than just simple competition. It’s the unrushed pace, it’s the statistics, it’s the eruption of excitement that comes from a triple to the gap or a defensive gem. And it’s the ballparks. Few things are as beautiful to me as a pristine baseball diamond. I remember the thrill of walking out of the tunnels at old Tiger Stadium and seeing that field, with it’s precisely laid out infield and emerald green grass, the lights on against a dark sky. Even with all the games that I’ve seen, I still get that same feeling every time I cross the concourse at Comerica Park, and get my first glimpse.
My Mother taught me the love of baseball, but it’s the memory of my Father that has motivated me to do something positive and help raise money to fight the disease that took him from me. Lymphoma is a terribly insidious cancer. It strikes people of all ages and in many different ways. And it always seems to come back for another round. A dear friend of mine is fighting this battle right now, so in support of her, in memory of my Father, and with the goal of defeating blood cancers, I ask you to give generously to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They are a well-respected charity that I am proud to support. Please use the link on this site or click here to donate.
